Spinning your tires only digs you in deeper. When a car or truck slides into a ditch, sinks into a muddy shoulder or gets stuck in soft dirt, you need a winch-out recovery from an operator who knows how to pull it out without causing more damage.

Nick's Towing San Jacinto handles winch-outs across San Jacinto, Hemet and the surrounding valley, from rural roads to mountain turnouts. In many cases we pull you out and you drive away with no tow needed. Call (951) 355-4290 24/7.

What Is a Winch-Out Recovery?

A winch-out is when a tow operator uses the truck's cable winch to pull a stuck vehicle back to solid, level ground. The tow truck parks on firm footing, runs the cable to your vehicle's recovery point and pulls it out slowly and steadily.

It's different from a regular tow. The goal is to get your vehicle unstuck, not to haul it anywhere. If your car is undamaged once it's back on the pavement, you can usually drive it home. If something is bent, leaking or broken, we can switch to a tow on the spot.

Winch-outs range from simple, like a front tire dropped off the edge of a driveway, to complicated jobs where a vehicle has slid down an embankment and needs rigging and snatch blocks to change the pulling angle.

Where Vehicles Get Stuck Around San Jacinto

The valley mixes city streets with open land, ranch property and foothill roads, so we see a wide range of stuck-vehicle calls:

  • Dirt roads and ranch properties in Homeland, Winchester, Nuevo and the rural edges of San Jacinto
  • Soft shoulders along Ramona Expressway, Gilman Springs Rd and Sanderson Ave, especially after rain
  • Drainage ditches where a driver swerved or misjudged a turn at night
  • Construction lots and new subdivisions where the ground hasn't been paved yet
  • Mountain turnouts along SR-74 and SR-243, including snow and ice in winter near Idyllwild
  • Driveways and yards where a wheel dropped off the edge of the concrete

Winter storms are our busiest time for winch-outs. The valley's clay soil turns slick fast, and dirt lots that are fine all summer can trap a truck after a single storm.

What’s included

  • Mud, sand, ditch and soft-shoulder recoveries
  • Embankment and off-road pullouts where safely reachable
  • Snow and ice recoveries on mountain roads
  • Cars, pickups, SUVs and lifted 4x4s
  • Work trucks, box trucks and small motorhomes
  • Trailers and campers stuck in soft ground
  • Snatch block rigging for angled pulls
  • Damage check after the pull
  • Tow on the spot if the vehicle isn't drivable

Vehicles We Pull Out

Our winch-out recovery covers light- and medium-duty vehicles, including:

  • Cars, minivans and crossovers
  • Pickups and SUVs, including lifted 4x4s that got in over their heads
  • Work trucks and vans stuck at job sites
  • Box trucks and smaller motorhomes
  • Trailers and campers that sank in soft ground

For lighter off-road vehicles, we'll recover them as long as the truck can safely reach a solid position nearby. We don't drive tow trucks into places that would put the operator or the equipment at risk, and we'll tell you honestly if a spot isn't reachable.

How We Protect Your Vehicle During a Winch-Out

A careless winch-out can rip off a bumper, bend a tie rod or damage the undercarriage. Our operators work slowly and plan the pull first:

  • Assess the situation. We look at how the vehicle is sitting, what it's resting on and which direction it should come out.
  • Use proper attachment points. We hook to frame-mounted recovery points or tow hooks, never to bumpers or suspension arms.
  • Change the angle when needed. Snatch blocks and anchor points let us pull from the side or around obstacles.
  • Stabilize first. If a vehicle is at risk of rolling, we secure it before we start pulling.

Once it's out, we'll look underneath with you for leaks or damage before you drive away.

Tips to Avoid Getting Stuck in the Valley

We're always happy to help, but we'd rather you didn't need us. A few local lessons from years of rainy-season calls:

  • Respect wet dirt. After a storm, the clay soil around the valley gets slick and soft quickly. If a dirt road or lot looks dark and shiny, park on the pavement and walk in.
  • Watch for flooded dips. Low crossings and dips on rural roads can hold water after heavy rain. Don't drive through water when you can't see the bottom.
  • Don't pull far onto the shoulder after rain. Gravel and dirt shoulders that look firm can give way under the weight of a truck.
  • Carry the basics. A shovel, traction boards and a phone charger go a long way, especially if you drive ranch roads or head up to the mountains.

What to Do When You're Stuck

If you're stuck, stop spinning the tires. It heats the tires and transmission and digs deeper ruts. Then:

  • Check that everyone is safe, and get out of the vehicle if it's leaning or near traffic.
  • Turn on your hazards, especially on a road shoulder or at night.
  • Note your location: cross streets, mile markers or a pin from your phone.
  • Call (951) 355-4290 and describe how the vehicle is sitting and what it's stuck in.

If the vehicle went off the road in a crash, call 911 first if anyone is hurt. After that, our accident towing team can handle the recovery and the tow.

Questions about winch-out recovery

Don’t see yours? Call dispatch, we’re happy to answer.

Is a winch-out cheaper than a tow?

Often it is, because we aren't hauling the vehicle anywhere. The price depends on how stuck the vehicle is, how far the truck has to reach and how much rigging is needed. A wheel off a driveway is quick. A truck down an embankment takes more time and equipment. We'll quote it once we know the situation.

Can you get my truck out of the mud on a dirt road?

Usually, yes, as long as our tow truck can reach a firm spot within cable range. Our winches can pull from a good distance, so we don't need to drive right up to your vehicle. If the road in is too soft for our truck, we'll tell you and discuss other options like waiting for the ground to dry.

Do you do winch-outs in the snow near Idyllwild?

Yes, when roads are open and conditions are safe for our trucks. Winter storms can bring snow and ice to SR-74, SR-243 and the roads around Idyllwild. Arrival times are longer in bad weather, and chain controls may apply. Stay with your vehicle if it's safe, keep warm and call us with your location.

Will a winch-out damage my car?

A careful operator keeps the risk low by using proper recovery points, pulling slowly and changing the angle when needed. Some damage can be unavoidable if the vehicle is already resting on rocks or a curb. We'll point out anything we see before we start, so you know what to expect.

My car slid off the road. Should I call 911 or a tow truck?

If anyone is hurt, the vehicle is blocking traffic or there's damage to property, call 911 first. Law enforcement may need to make a report. If it's a simple slide into a ditch with no injuries, call us directly. We'll get you out and back on the road or towed to a shop.

Need a tow right now?

Tell dispatch where you are. We’ll give you a price and an arrival time before the truck leaves.
