Idyllwild is a different world from the valley floor — a mile up, with pine forest, cabins on steep lots and roads that ice over in winter. Idyllwild towing is mostly about getting vehicles out of tough spots: snow slide-offs, cars that can't make it up a driveway, and visitors whose brakes didn't enjoy the drive.
Nick's Towing San Jacinto climbs from San Jacinto via SR-74 and SR-243, about 30 miles and close to an hour. Call (951) 355-4290 for mountain towing and winch-outs any time of year.
Snow, Ice and Chain Controls
Winter storms bring snow and ice to SR-243, SR-74 and the local roads around Idyllwild and Pine Cove. Caltrans can require chains on the highways, and people who head up without them sometimes slide into a ditch or snowbank on the first curve. Shaded streets stay icy long after the main roads are clear.
We do winch-out recovery for cars stuck in snow or off the road. Keep in mind our trucks face the same conditions you do. During a heavy storm or road closure, we'll tell you honestly how long it will take, and in some cases we'll need to wait until it's safe.
Two Ways Up the Mountain
From the valley, we come up SR-74 through Valle Vista to Mountain Center and then up SR-243 into town. The other route is SR-243 from Banning, a long, winding climb with switchbacks past Lake Fulmor and Pine Cove. Either way, it's a serious grade.
Brakes overheat on the way down, and older cars overheat on the way up. If yours does, pull into a turnout and call; don't try to push through. We'll bring a flatbed and take the car down to a shop in Hemet, San Jacinto, or Banning.
On the way down, use a lower gear instead of riding the brakes, and pull into turnouts to let faster traffic pass. Both habits keep the brakes cooler and lower the odds you'll need us.
Idyllwild Towing for Cabins and Steep Driveways
Many homes here sit on steep, narrow lots with gravel or dirt driveways. Cabins that are used part-time often have a car that's been sitting for months, sometimes years. Dead batteries, flat tires and rodent-chewed wiring are common.
Tell us about the access when you call — driveway slope, width, trees, gates, and whether there's snow on the ground. We'll bring a winch line long enough to reach and pick the safest way to load. For AWD and 4x4 vehicles, we use a flatbed; see our flatbed towing page for why.
Cabin Cars and Off-Season Pickups
Many Idyllwild cabin owners live down the hill and only come up on weekends. If you need a car moved while you're not there, we can often arrange it: leave the keys in a lockbox or with a neighbor, share the gate code, and we'll send photos once it's loaded.
For the old cabin car that hasn't moved in years, our junk car removal can haul it away with the right paperwork. Plan these jobs for dry months; snow and ice make steep driveways much harder to work on safely.
Visitors, Trailheads and Town
On busy weekends, Idyllwild fills up with hikers, climbers and day-trippers. Humber Park, the trailheads to Tahquitz and Suicide Rock, and the village center all see dead batteries and lockouts from people who left lights on or locked keys in the car before a hike. A lockout or jump usually fixes it without a tow.
Cell signal can be weak in parts of the mountain, so if you can, note your exact location before you lose coverage.
Trailhead lots like Humber Park are narrow and fill early. If a tow truck can't fit, we may ask you to meet the driver at a nearby wide spot so we can load without blocking other hikers.
